OstenZen FAQ What is acupuncture?

It is based on the physiological inter-relationship of body organs and their energetic laws.
Acupuncture began as an attempt to understand the invisible flow of qi that gave life and vitality to the human body.
The theory recognizes a gentle, almost imperceptible concept called Qi which permeates all parts of the body, tissues and cells. The presence of Qi distinguishes the living from the dead. Twelve major pathways create a web which transverses the connective tissue of the bio-electromagnetic body. These pathways supply the head, hands, legs, feet, torso and internal organs with blood and qi. As long as blood and qi flow harmoniously in the body's meridians, health is abundant. Any stagnation or impeded flow of the qi in the meridians will cause a malfunction and may result in illness. Acupuncture is a safe and effective therapy. By gently inserting and stimulating ultra-thin needles at strategic locations on the body (at acupuncture points), acupuncture redistributes blood and qi and improves the function of the diseased tissues.
In the early 1970's American newspaper reporters covering President Nixon's visit to China wrote about a medical system virtually unknown in the United States at the time. Because of the media attention, acupuncture was suddenly known by millions of Americans. According to these reports, instead of using analgesics, the Chinese acupuncturists were able to block the pain of surgery by inserting needles into their patients at specific points. Even more astonishing to Americans, it was said that acupuncture could relieve different illnesses. It took several years after the publicity of Nixon's visit to China for acupuncture colleges to establish themselves in the United States. Today more that 60 colleges throughout North America graduate some 1000 new acupuncturists each year as the demand for acupuncture increases. It is estimated that 15 million persons each year try Acupuncture for the first time and more would try if they knew more about it.
