Zhu Xiaolin, a Chinese marathon runner who
finished fourth in the Bejing Olympics, used cupping
Zhu Xiaolin had three visible bruises on each side of her back. The brown marks were from “cupping,” a kind of needle-free acupuncture used to adjust your qi. Cupping is a Chinese medicinal technique that treats pain and lung disorders in athletes.
An alcohol soaked cotton ball on a pair of forceps is ignited and put underneath a sterile glass cup. The glass cup is rapidly placed on the skin surface The flame expels air from the cups, causing a negative pressure which creates the internal vacuum suction on the skin. This technique stimulates circulation, relieves swelling, and greatly enhances an acupuncture or electro-acupuncture treatment. Cupping is used for many conditions, including; back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, common colds and influenza.
