Preparation Method:
1. For Best Results use a Double Shot.
The global standard for red espresso is: 12g of red espresso yields 2oz extraction for an 8oz size cup. It is possible to pull a longer shot (up to 4oz.) to cater for larger sized drinks. Note that after 2oz of extraction it may start to lose strength of flavor.
12g of red espresso, which can extract up to 4oz., is the basis for all 12oz and 16oz red drinks. For a 20oz drink, you will need to use an additional 12g to extract another 4oz. to ensure consistency of strength and flavor.
Comment: Should you encounter a very slow extraction while expressing, it is likely that you have put too much red espresso in your filter basket. Unlike coffee, Rooibos swells in hot water and can prevent the water from passing through the basket effectively. In this instance, simply use less Red Espresso.
2. Red Espresso is Best Prepared with a Espresso Machine.
Red Espresso can also be prepared in a Coffee Drip Machine with a mesh filter, a French Press, a Percolator, a stove top espresso maker or it can simply be steeped as regular tea. Should you alternate between making coffee and Red Espresso on the same equipment clean the equipment well to avoid cross contamination between the two products. If you are looking for a Red Espresso-friendly machine, we recommend a Breville model. You can get one for about $399 and it will deliver an excellent crema using rooibos espresso.
Red Espresso Recipe Tips!
- A fresh shot of Red Espresso, can be mixed with Apple juice, and tastes great with White Cranberry juice too.
- Add a shot of your favorite syrup (e.g. caramel, gingerbread, cinnamon and vanilla) to your red rooibos latte or red rooibos cappuccino.
- Try Agave syrup as a sweetener. Agave syrup is notable in that its glycemic index and glycemic load are apparently lower than most, if not all other natural sweeteners on the market.
- For special occasions a teaspoon of sweetened condensed milk is a delicious treat, but of course not as healthy as the above mentioned methods.
