Don’t just stay in bed and wait.

Chinese medicine treats the common cold effectively with both acupuncture and Chinese herbs, and they have done so for centuries. You don't have to just stay in bed and let the cold run its course.  Take action!

There are Two Main Reasons for Getting the Flu

According to Chinese medicine, common cold is caused by Wind-Cold or Wind-Heat Invasion. The symptoms of each pattern are different.

Wind Cold: The main symptoms are chills and lack of perspiration with a slight fever. In addition, you may have body aches along with nasal congestion, a headache, and possibly a cough.

Wind Heat: The main symptoms are mostly fever and sweat, with less chills. In addition you may have a sore throat, nasal congestion, and cough. In most instances you will not have body aches during a Wind-Heat Invasion.

The above two patterns may be complicated by Interior-Deficiency, Dampness or Dryness. In climates where the summer is hot and humid, a pattern referred to as Summer Heat Dampness prevails.

In both children and adults, the most common pattern of common cold is Wind Heat Invasion. An acupuncturist and herbalist will recommend different Chinese herbs and treat different acupuncture points, depending on which of these two main types of common cold a person has.

Acupuncture
Stimulates your Immune System

50% of persons infected with any given cold virus never manifest any signs or symptoms of infection, because their immune system is strong enough to suppress the viral activity. Those whose immune systems are less strong usually develop symptoms and will benefit from acupuncture.

Acupuncture principally regulates biological vital substances with needles. It refers to the insertion of very thin sterile needles into specific locations producing beneficial results. Certain points can relieve stuffy nose, cough, headache, cough, body aches, sore throat and fever.
In terms of the common cold, acupuncture needle restores immune function by stimulating the body to release biological substances This encourages the body to more effectively combat the viral infection.

In order to get the most out of your treatment experience, some acupuncturists will combine acupuncture with other techniques such as:  cupping, Gua Sha (rubbing techniques) and Tui Na (Chinese bodytherapy)

There is no reason why you should have to suffer for 7-10 days, lose time from work, play and family. Next time you have the sniffles, remember that acupuncture and Chinese herbs effectively treat the common cold.

Chinese
Herbs Stop the Common Cold

Chinese herbs quite often stop the cold, or effectively reduce the duration and symptoms of the disease

A Chinese herbal formula typically contains many biolologically important substances such as: anti-inflammatories, decongestants, antihistamines, and immune enhancing components.

Try Chinese herbal remedies in various forms

Traditionally, the herbalist gives you a bulk of raw herbs which you then boil at home and drink as tea. Today, you can get them pre-cooked and vacuum-packed for your convenience.

Very often an herbalist will give you any number of ready-made pills, granules or powders. These are easier to take and tend to be less potent, but they can be equally as effective if taken at the correct dosage. Don't be surprised if your herbalist suggests that you take a handful of pills several times per day.

Some of the names of these commonly prescribed pre-made Chinese medicines include Yin Qiao San and Gan Mao Ling. These products are used for Common Cold due to Wind-Heat Invasion, whose main symptoms are fever and sore throat. If you always start a cold with a sore throat followed by the development of a fever, then you may want to keep one of these herbal remedies on hand.

Keep bottles of remedies in your medicine chest

Typically, one should take ready-made herbal medicines at the first sign of a cold, and continue taking them for a day or two after the symptoms have disappeared.

It is so important to begin taking these antiviral Chinese herbs as soon as the symptoms are noticed. Therefore, it is a good idea to keep bottles of these remedies in your medicine chest at home, in the glove compartment of your car, and in your desk at work, especially during the “flu season.”

Stopping the cold as quickly as possible is the key

The longer you allow a cold to develop prior to a treatment, the more likely it will continue to develop.
